PSEUDOGOUT
Definition
Pseudogout (SOO-doe-gout) is a
form of arthritis characterized by sudden, painful swelling in one or more of
your joints. These episodes can last for days or weeks. Pseudogout typically
occurs in older adults and most commonly affects the knee.
Causes
Pseudogout is caused by the
collection of salt called calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD). The buildup
of this salt forms crystals in the joints. This leads to attacks of joint
swelling and pain in the knees, wrists, ankles, and other joints. Pseudogout
usually affects only one or a few joints at a time. The attacks of joint
inflammation characterized by acute joint swelling, warmth, stiffness, and pain.
May last for days to weeks and can resolve spontaneously.
Diagnosis
Pseudogout can be diagnosed based
on symptoms and medical tests. The physician will use a needle to take fluid
from a swollen or painful joint to determine whether calcium pyrophosphate
crystals are present. An X-ray of the joint may be taken to determine whether
calcium-containing deposits are present in the cartilage, creating a condition
known as chondrocalcinosis. Other potential causes of symptoms, such as gout,
rheumatoid arthritis, or infection, must be ruled out.
Treatments and Drugs
Treatments and drugs to relieve
the pain and inflammation of pseudogout include:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) and
indomethacin (Indocin); Colchicine, this medication reduces inflammation in
people with gout, but it may also be useful in people with pseudogout who can't
take NSAIDs; Joint aspiration and injection. To relieve pain and pressure in an
affected joint, your doctor inserts a needle and removes some of the joint
fluid. Then he or she injects a corticosteroid to decrease inflammation and an
anesthetic to temporarily numb your joint; Take a rest.
Prevent
It is not known how to prevent
pseudogout. If the condition has developed because of some other medical
conditions, such as hemochromatosis (too much iron stored in the body), or
parathyroid problems. Treatment of that condition may prevent progression of
other features of that potentially dangerous illness and may in some cases,
slow the development of pseudogout.
